I have the same problem on Ubuntu 14.04. Plugging in the usb headset
makes it show up in the configuration tab of pavucontrol, but not in the
output tab.
$ killall pulseaudio

you still have the issue in newer Ubuntu version you should probably
open a new bug against gnome-control-center or unity-control-center
instead

I *think* I can make it work by ensuring that the headset is unplugged
when I login and then plugging it in later. This trick works at least
some of the time.

I had this on a previous kernel, then it went away and now it has come back.

In 'sound settings' the headset shows in the 'hardware' tab, but not in

This was a modprobe issue for me.
I had the following line in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf:
options snd-usb-audio index=0
Removing that line resolved the issue. The headset is assigned index 2
instead of index 0, as 0 and 1 are taken by my sound cards.

I am glad to see this bug because I reached my end about 5 min ago.
I have the exact behavior as is described above, i.e. usb headset and no
devices listed in the input and output tabs of the sound manager, but I
possibly have 2 added complications. No 1, I am running ubuntu precise
(12.04) and No
I am not sure whether this will help anyone, but I have just checked my
laptop, which is also running 11.04 (the comment above relates to my
desktop).
The laptop was last updated on 28 June, and works fine.
The desktop has had 3 updates since then and exhibits the problems

This still affects me. GN 2000 USB headset. I plug it in, and it shows
up in PA's Volume Control under "Configuration" but it is not shown
under Output Devices or Input Devices. Likewise for the KDE volume
control.

quite important to me for Guild Vent and the like. Doing a "killall
pulseaudio" will make the device show up and such however, and it seems
to be working fine after that, including the "test speaker" button. Will

For some reason, my headphones began working automagically last night.
No idea why, but now everything works fine. Gnome-volume-control
doesn't crash anymore, and the headphone shows up in output and is
