I ran into this same error when trying to build just about any package in an
out-of-the-box install of Xubuntu 6.10 with all updates as of Jan 30, 2007. It
appears that by default the required packages are not installed in Xubuntu,
maybe all Ubuntu distros?
As a workaround, try installing the
