I have been running Ubuntu 11.10 for a few weeks now, with the USB-
parallel cable cotinuing to work. Seeing the above request, I put the
parallel PCI card back in and tried to set up the printer, which is what
froze the machine under Ubuntu 10.10.
I am happy to report that nothing untoward happen

I bought a "USB Parallel Printer Cable" and had the printer work
immediately. Of course, that did not really solve the problem reported
above.
