I observed that unity and everything was working with the 173 driver
(not current) before updates aswell. Also, untill a couple weeks ago I
was able to use the nouveau driver, but this fails now aswell.
I'd like to refrain from updating the packages, but for me, it's like an
itch I can't scratch.
Andy, as both of us have the same graphics card, I'll tell you what's
working for me; reinstall, but during the install, connect your machine
to the internet and check "upgrade during installation" (word of advice,
dont select install the mp3 plugins, they never work for me, just
install ubuntu-res
I'm having the exact same problem on my test laptop with nVidia
Corporation G72M [Quadro NVS 110M/GeForce Go 7300]. Just done 2 fresh
installs of the 11.04 beta2 (64-bit) iso, and it's the same problem that
Matt describes.

Update: I just reinstalled 11.04, and selected the option to update
while installing. Though it updated most, it did not update all, and I
was able to run the older, NVIDIA version 173 (the latest my card can
safely run) to good effect. But when i chose to update it again, after
the initial update
When I first installed, if I tried to use the NVIDIA driver at all the
system would hang after login, forcing me to choose Ubuntu Classic. This
issue was resolved by selecting the experimental driver. Now, if I
select either of the 2 official NVIDIA drivers in Jockey, I get the

'ubuntu-bug jockey' from terminal. a similar issue bug 547066 was
fixed in the past

Mine says for the nvidia driver: "This driver is activated but not currently in
use".

A couple of things- Jockey is now showing the driver "Experimental 3D
Support for NVIDIA Cards" as active, but no change, still puts me in
Gnome. This is a different bug than #768178, but there are some
similarities, being the GeForce graphics card. After investigating why
the initial official NVID

I don't think the bug is in unity. as Matt said that after update jockey
shows no driver to be active. moving to jockey.
