The issue is fixed I believe as unity panel no longer goes black in
Oneiric.

Hi Omer. I tried out the steps you have mentioned. And the problem seems
to persist. I guess the fix is a work in progress. i hope its fixed
before natty is released :)

There is a known bug (bug 685552) where enabling/disabling any plugins
crashed unity. There have been a bit of work done to fix the issue and
after that, now enabling/disabling any plugins in ccsm makes unity do
some really weird things. I think we can assume this bug as a duplicate
of bug 685552.
To add to the previous explanation - Alt+F2 doesn't work 'IF' unity
crashes, upon disabling compiz features from the CCSM
