from hibernation I still see the right hand side of the screen, so only
the majority on the left is scrambled.

Performed clean install on an acer aspire one. I just tried hibernation today
and the bug affects me too.
I can also confirm what Amar said about going into suspend and resuming again
fixes the issue (until the next hibernation of course)
Also I do not have any ipmi related files in /etc/init.d s
Downgraded to LTS edition and happy with it

(1) Although the screen is garbled, the dialogue asking for your
password is there - just type it and hit return. On my screen, the left
hand 25% is clean, so I can find the power down options and suspend.
(2) Alternatively, and much more simply

Here's an interesting trick, that solved the problem for me, sort of:
When the screen hangs after waking up from hibernate, go into _suspend_
and wake back up from suspend. That should give you back a normal
screen.
Perhaps this trick might work for you too (as a kluge solution) until
the driver/
