Currently I'm using compiz from this ppa:
http://ppa.launchpad.net/vanvugt/compiz-preproposed/ubuntu
It still has the bug but if I disable every mipmap option (in expo, cube
unfold, switchers, everywhere) then the bug disappears.

Hi there. On Gentoo, enabling the workarounds plugin and checking "Force
Synchronization between X and GLX" fixes this problem for me. This is
said to only work for nVidia cards, and to cause the problem on Intel
cards.
YMMV!

When using ATI with fglrx driver, go to ATI Catalyst Control Center and
disable Catalyst A.I. in 3D->More Settings. Make sure you have mipmaps
disabled in Expo plugin. Restart compiz (compiz --replace).

I can confirm what miracle2k is saying. I have recently tried Natty on
laptop which has an nVidia card and the issue does not appear on that
laptop.

On the machine that works, I have these packages installed:
ii compiz1:0.9.4+bzr20110606-0ubuntu1~natty2
OpenGL window and compositing manager
ii compiz-core 1:0.9.4+bzr20110606-0ubuntu1~natty2
OpenGL window and compositi
In case this is relevant - I don't get this bug to appear on a machine
using an Nvidea Card (using the experimental open source driver), but I
do have it on a machine with a ATI Radeon card (using the proprietary
driver).
In both cases, I'm using the latest Natty with Expo and Mipmaps enabled.

I had to downgrade to the compiz found in maverick because it seems that nobody
cares that compiz is unusable.
The only downside is that ccsm does not work so I guess I will try to edit the
config file by hand.

This is a very serious bug for me, it makes compiz unusable!
While I can fix a window by minimizing it, I can't fix for example cairo-dock.
Only by restarting it.
And anyway it is very annoying having to minimize some of my windows every
three minutes or so.

I have the exact same problem.
I have a fully updated Natty with fglrx but turning off mipmaps in the Expo
plugin does not correct the bug for me.
Just a few quick window switching arises the problem for me with many different
windows including pidgin, gcalctool, firefox, geany, chromium etc
--
I found out what was the cause - Mipmap setting in Expo plugin. It has
to be turned off.
