I nearly certain that I did not see such dependencies in aptitude, and I
know that there were no broken packages.
I did a complete upgrade, then followed the upgrade instructions
successfully.
There were no errors, no false starts.
I'll check the details when I get home.

Buck: unity depends both on compiz-core and compiz-plugins-main. The
clean install and netbook install from a minimal system (apt-get install
unity) has been test a couple of days ago and works as intended. Are you
sure to not have perfom a partial upgrade at some point of the cycle?

@Bilal: this is not the issue. I was eventually able to get things
working by installing the full compiz package ( only compiz-core was
required by dependencies ) and running the compiz-window-decorator.
I'll need to fiddle with it some more to find how to reproduce the bug
exactly. At this point

Maybe your GPU drivers don't support Unity (yet), you can install Unity
2D from software center in the meantime.
