No, I can't try it again: I don't have linode anymore, and I don't

On intrepid I just experienced this, but it went away after resetting
the password. Not sure how the password was initially set, since I'm
virtual hosted on linode.com and the password was initially set through
the linode web gui. After I reset the password at the command line with
passwd the ful

This problem is probably due to pam_ldap using crypt hashes. Due to a
bug in pam_ldap (see http://bugzilla.padl.com/show_bug.cgi?id=306),
pam_ldap does not create md5 hashes, even if configured to do so.
IMHO this is a serious upstream bug.

I haven't verified the bug, but if it exists, I think it does compromise
security. If i make a 30-character passphrase, i'm counting on the
length of the passphrase to protect me against cracking attempts.

Thanks for the report; I've unflagged this as a security vulnerability,
since it seems like a regular bug. (It is a bug in the authentication
system, but not one that compromises security.)
