Same here. Only difference is that it started after upgrading to 12.04.
(Maybe beam.smp was installed due to some new dependency.)

I can confirm this.
The CPU utilization time is very high.
The beam.smp process is preventing the CPU from idling.
This could be the reason that Natty is using so much battery power!
