Let me rephrase that update-manager runs sudo apt-get update than runs
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade. than it will resolve depends issues at that
point but since dist-upgrade wasnt marking the held back packages it
was failing to continue to fix depends thats why the crash report
reports what it does.
Robert update-manager runs dist-upgrade all it is is a front end to it.
dist-upgrade was broken cause the held back packages to not be held back
causing update-manager to fail because dist-upgrade is failing. please
update apt sudo apt-get upgrade apt than try it the version of apt that
fixes this
sigh, you are still missing the point John!
update-manager should handle the failure in a more graceful manner than
just having an unhandled exception.
Unmarking this as a duplicate, because *even though apt has been fixed*
there is a separate code change to make here.

This is a duplicate as update-manager should mark the packages as held
back and its not. either way with thte new apt it should work fine now.

This is *not* a duplicate. update-manager is failing ungracefully, while
this is triggered by the e-d-s problem, that does not make this into the
e-d-s problem!
