Using separate /boot partition seems to fix the problem. Shouldn't ubiquity
just check for it?
Or is it maybe a problem with initrd updating after a first install?

Confirmed with 11.04 RELEASE(ubuntu-11.04-desktop-i386.iso) on T-61
laptop with a single btrfs "/". Any idea to grub-boot from a btrfs file-
system?

I can confirm it with Beta: both fresh install on AMD64 and i386 with EXT2
/boot partition and BTRFS root partition failed.
[I used Virtualbox.]
On AMD64 there is a black screen upon first attempt to boot.
On i386 it starts busybox with btrfs supposedly mounted on /root, but

Those previous files are the logs from my failed installation. It showed
the following message "Executing 'grub-install /dev/sda' failed. This is
a fatal error." @jtlb: Was this the error you encountered too?
But sometimes it does finish the installing process without error, but

Colin, sorry I didn't know that GRUB supports btrfs in 11.04. I ran into
this issue as well, but then I remembered that GRUB didn't work with
btrfs. I'll do an install today and send the logs.

Please attach /var/log/syslog, /var/log/partman, and
/var/log/installer/debug from the failed installation run.
Marius: On the contrary, GRUB in Ubuntu 11.04 is supposed to have direct
btrfs support. I want to know about bugs in it, so please don't shoo
reporters away saying that it doesn't work
Yes but the actual bug is that it is possible to choose BTFS as a
filesystem for the "/" which, indeed, does'nt work.

As far as I know you can't boot from a btrfs partition.
Workaround - you can make a small ext3 partition (max 250MB) for grub and
kernel:
Type : ext3
Mount point : "/boot"
Bootable flag : yes
