I changed pc and gave the other away. It's ok to close the trend.

This bug seems to have hit a dead end. I am closing it, if you are able
to provide anymore diagnostic information later when trying the latest
Ubuntu release ( http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download ) please feel
free to reopen.
Thanks!

I'll get a CD and try it out... BTW you might want to talk to the people at
MEPIS, V6.5 gets it right there.

Philippe: when you have time to try 7.10, test without a xorg.conf by
moving it to another name. Also, provide the generated xorg.conf and
Xorg.0.log when it fails to start with a correct resolution.

Mr Harrington,
To be frank, I got so fed up with this bug that I reverted to XP until it's
fixed.
The only distro that managed my 1400x1050 resolution was simply mepis
6.5(using a special feature at install) until, version
6.5.02 where I guess they used ubuntu rather than debian components.

Thanks for reporting this bug in Ubuntu. Can you reproduce the behavior
under Feisty or newer Ubuntu? If so, can you please attach your
/etc/X11/xorg.conf and /var/log/Xorg.0.log files, and the output from
lspci -vv?

The problem is still there after upgrade to Feisty 7.04, can't get a
1400x1050 screen. Stuck at 1280x1024.

I just tried Feisty Herd 1 from the CD, and its the same, the screen is
very small and I can't raise the resolution to 1050x1400 which is what I
need.
Can anyone help?

Forgot to say that I had to install Edgy from Dapper to get a higher
resolution from 1024x768.
If I tried to install direct from a new Edgy CD, my max resolution would
be 1024x764.
I think I need something more like 1400x?

it doesnt look like any attachments you were trying to add worked. Try
visiting https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/74144
and adding the attachment manually.
