is gnome-terminal.

Ubuntu Hardy i386 on an AMD64 processor, aptitude 0.4.9-2ubuntu5.
Don't need to be doing anything special in aptitude.
One thing that may need to be clarified: The strange event only happens
on the first keystroke after resuming aptitude. Subsequent keystrokes
are fine.
And the down arrow no lo
Unfortunately I was unable to reproduce this issue. Is there anything
that you have to be doing in aptitude for this to happen? (Like
installing a package?) Also could you provide more detail like what
version of Ubuntu you are using, the version of aptitude, and what type
of machine this is r
