Apparently this is a regression from multiarch; this /lib64/libiberty.a end up in binutils and binutils-multiarch instead of binutils-dev The lib64 dir is created because libs are installed to MULTIOSDIR = `$(CC) $(CFLAGS) -print-multi-os-directory` from libiberty/Makefile.in. gcc-4.4 -print-mul
