This appears to be a bug in the linker, although it could be triggered
by undetected memory corruption from icedove. A workaround that I have
found is to run:
LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/icedove/libxpcom_core.so icedove
(this is for icedove; on Ubuntu, replace "icedove" with "thunderbird").

I dumped my Xubuntu install, and did a fresh install from the Ubuntu
11.04 Beta 1 CD, then did an update and installed thunderbird again, and
it works this time. Version is: 3.1.9+nobinonly-0ubuntu1
Not sure if the version changed in the interim or if it was just broken
on Xubuntu.
