(And that deficiency is driven by a limitation that the -nvidia driver
misbehaves when GL is enabled in cairo. But that issue is not a
priority to NVIDIA to fix, so presumably wayland will be stuck with
software rendering for some time. That is, unless someone figures out
some clever cairo packag
wayland now uses software rendering if cairo-gl is missing, so the lack
of cairo-gl is entirely just a cairo packaging deficiency now.

No, that should be ok. If you check the changelog for that version:
cairo (1.10.2-2ubuntu2) natty; urgency=low
* Don't turn the gl backend on for natty since it creates issues for nvidia

The available (and installable) libcairo2-dev version is has an ubuntu
suffix. Can it be that this prevents resolving the dependency?
1.10.2-2ubuntu2 seems >= 1.10.2-2 to me but dpkg disagrees. Any dpkg
experts here?

Same here. Clean 11.04 installation, all I did was to enable Partners
and then I updated the system. No programs or repositories added. Then,
I received the error:

Timo was right, I had some PPA dependency problems at that moment.
@Fabrizio: last time I checked out this, wayland was not installable
cause the ubuntu's libcairo has not support for cairo-gl (that is
requeriment for the current wayland in ubuntu). cairo-gl was deactivated
as it gave multiple pro
Same error here and I don't have related extra repositories (never had).
libcairo2-dev installs fine, but when installing wayland I get the same error.
