Isn't nm-applet the icon to the left of the keys icon? Also, is this
desktop Lubuntu, Xubuntu, or just Ubuntu/Gnome with the panel set a
different color? Thanks.

Is network-manager running?
ps -ef | grep NetworkManager
You might also want to attach a screenshot of your desktop. At this
point I have absolutely no clue why nm-applet wouldn't show up.

THomas, can you then attach .xsession-errors or the output from starting
nm-applet from the terminal? There is no reason for nm-applet not to
show up in the notification-area, except maybe if network-manager wasn't
running (but then IIRC it still shows, with a "no connection" icon).

It is. Other applets *are* shown (Opera (not really an applet), Indexer,
krb5-user-applet, Empathy).

I still haven't received a response from the original reporter, setting
back to Incomplete:
If you're not using LXDE, can you please make sure you have the
notification area enabled and added to gnome-panel?

So basically nm-applet is not running after login un.
.xsession-errors do not contain anything interesting from this issue point of
view:
divanov@t61p:~$ cat .xsession-errors
Xsession: X session started for divanov at Fri Apr 1 10:59:13 EEST 2011
Setting IM through im-switch for locale=en_US.
S
Please attach .xsession-errors and make sure nm-applet is running.

I'm using LXDE, not KDE and the former uses the same applet (nm-applet)
as Gnome. On the other hand, I'm using LXDE on Fedora 14 and there is no
problem with nm-applet.

Thomas, any news about this?
Daniil, Kubuntu uses vastly different applications and ways to display
nm-applet; and usually shows the plasma applet that replaces it instead.
Regardless, since this is a different issue involving KDE, please file a
new separate bug report and attach .xsession-errors
I observe the same issue on two Kubuntu 10.10 machines. I'm using LXDE
as my desktop environment and nm-applet doesn't show up. However, ibus
applet is visible in system tray, thus, this is not a problem of system
tray not being visible.

Please make sure you really have a "Notification Area" widget added to
your panel; while the applications appear to be running, the widget
needs to be present in a panel in order for the icons to show.
