Can anybody explain it to me. Does it work or not. I'm going to buy a
laptop with this chip. What does it mean "Supported in upstream git". Is
this supported in Ubuntu 9.04 with current updates or not ?

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the
upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would
appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel.
There are one of two ways you should be able to test:
1) If you are comfortable

Sorry, I forgot to mention that just like Gutsy, adding the following line
options snd-hda-intel enable=1 index=0 model=basic
to the alsa configuration file /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base fix it

I have same Laptop model and same sound card and I can confirm that the
sound isn't working even with a fresh installation of Hardy 8.04
