No luck. It still gets stuck in the busybox prompt, without recognizing
keystrokes. I've attached a picture of the screen (after enabling
"quiet" and disabling "--debug", because the kernel messages were
crowding out the errors).
I note that this time my 2.6.17 initrd image wasn't tampered with,
Try updating to latest feisty (initramfs-tools and kernel). Kernel
version should be 2.6.20-3.

The workaround didn't help. I finally copied the initrd image for
2.6.17 from another computer, and was able to boot off of it.
Let me know if you'd like me to try booting with various kernel
parameters and sending pictures of the screen.

Looks to me like you have some custom Mactel modules on your machine,
which would need to be recompiled for the 2.6.19 kernel. However, these
modules will be included in feisty.
