OK, I just upgraded to 3.3.1 via the ppa
The behaviour is unchanged. However, by furkling about on forums I discovered
that turning on experimental features in tools-options-general ungreys the
macro recorder. And I can record macros.
So this morphs into a documentation bug: the help does not
The help-about box for Calc says:
LibreOffice 3.3.0
OOO330m19 (Build:6)
tag libreoffice-3.3.0.4, Ubuntu package 1:3.3.0-1lucid1
I installed it from http://ppa.launchpad.net/libreoffice/ppa/ubuntu
The system says
