I tried turning them off, at first this didn't work (last year) but it was
part of the same session. I've just tried again with accessibility off (this
time since boot) and it appears to work.

on the gdb prompt while rhythmbox is hanging

I'm not sure what my graphics card has to do with this?
I tried moving the .gnome2/rhythmbox and then trying opening it and trying, but
same problem :(
