Yes, the pre-3.08 version works OK. It doesn't do everything that I
need, but that would be a separate bug/feature request. Can close this
one.

There were a lot of things happening with some releases of X.org which
caused Xnee to malfunction. Instead of spending time on fixing an old
Xnee (3.02 is rather old, we're currently planning 3.08).
Can you test this non official release:

It's worse -- the crash is actually in cnee. Verbose log attached.
I don't know if this is a bug in cnee or if you are using out-of-date
sources that are incompatible with the ubuntu 10.04 desktop.
