If the option "dark screen" is choosed, ony solution is to restart the X
Server. If you try to active hibernate or standby, the laptop stays
black - then you have to turn it off and on again.

I am taking your friend closes the lid of the laptop down? hence I'm
assigning this to acpid, as I believe it runs a script when the lid is
closed.
