Just installed 11.04 Final and got the same error message. Now the
system is unbootable.

Sorry it is not closed. Got the same problem after using update-grub.
Problem is hard to fixed and totally erratic
Computer just keep rebooting not showing the first grub menu for os
selection.
After many crash I changed the default destination for the output file
as generated by update-grub
It appears to have been fixed somehow. haven't encountered this problem
anymore. So i'll mark as expired...

Found a workaround :) tried being a bit brave...
after the error, i manually removed the old grub.cfg from /boot/grub and
renamed grub.cfg.new to grub.cfg. Can boot fine so i think that fixed
it.
