I agree that this has to be implemented.
Moreover, it would be great if the thumbnail is given a higher importance(make
it prominent and main and big), and the standard ".deb" icon should be used

That would not be a good idea Wouter.
If you assume that a rpm-thumbnailer is made available, then how would you
differentiate between packages?
You should never lose context.

For clarity, it would probably a good idea to remove the debian logo
from the icon if an application emblem is added.
