This is my first installation of Ubuntu, so I cannot provide feedback
on prior versions.
In an unrelated note: I have to modify xorg.conf default bit rate

My installation has similar issues. Specifically, the wpc11 card works with
the Live-CD but not after installing it to the hard drive.
System info:
Toshiba Satellite 4090xdvd P2 400Mhz
Linksys wpc11

also, the install only works about half of the time. it'll hang on
detecting hardware (i think) at 93% (i'm sure of this number). i've let
it go for about 20 minutes at this stage before starting over.
