Actually, it looks like this which got fixed just after 2.6.37-rc2
released

As a temporary workaround you can boot into the 2.6.37-4 kernel which is
based on -rc1 until the -rc3 on
I believe this should be fixed in the newest xserver-xorg-video-vmware
and just put in a sync request for it in natty

This is no surprise...but I am able to get xorg to work by removing the
package xserver-xorg-video-vmware (Ubuntu's video driver for VMware
guests). It seems that the problem may be specific to the package
xserver-xorg-video-vmware. Of course, with the generic driver X11 is
extremely slow.
