Hi Clint,
I recently gave up. I did a fresh reinstall of Ubuntu 10.10 (previously
only upgraded from 10.4 to 10.10), then installed release 6. of Google
Earth. Whallaaa, problem fixed ;-), I couldn't tell you what went wrong.

Does this still happen with the 6.0 release of Google Earth?
If so, what version of Ubuntu was this on? You can easily provide us
with this information and some other helpful information by running this
in a terminal window:
