I'm unable to reproduce this with Firefox 3.6.12 or Opera 11, however, in
Firefox I am prompted with the following whereas Opera silently fails to save.

cannot confirm the issue, here i get an error message saying that the
file cannot be saved in that location and that i need to choose a
different one.

Gtk file selector can do the same. For example I can also reproduce with
Opera.
It is also worth noting that if you run Opera under KDE, Opera will use
