This is still an issue on my Dell Studio XPS 16 running a freshly
installed Ubuntu 11.04 beta 1.
The fix works. Just add that options line to alsa-base.conf and reboot
will fix it.

Solution:
1) open alsa-base.conf file
$ sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
2) add the text below to the file (last line)
options snd-
