Same problem with Kubuntu Feisty {and Edgy} on Dell Inspiron 700m. The
lid state {/proc/acpi/button/lid/*/state} is always reported as closed
and hal doesn't detect any lid event {no output from `lshal -m`}.
`acpi_listen` doesn't detect any events either.

It's a confirmed bug, but not confirmed that it is a kernel bug. This
could potentially be a buggy BIOS.
Please check if there are any BIOS updates for the machine(s) affected.
Also check if there is perhaps an updated DSDT from the acpi website.
