Cranking up the gamma on the images I can confirm that the black area
isn't entirely filled with just black. As the colors are very close to
black the severity of the problem entirely depends on the brightness of
the display.
A fully pitch black background would be better so I'm going to correct

0.2 distributed via the repositories is a no go, it still shows the old
brown splash, even though the preview is with a black background.
The new 0.3 that can be downloaded from launchapd is not with a black
background. The pictures consists of a nice ubuntu logo on all black background
(that fi
usplash-theme-ubuntu 0.2 is a new version/design. looks much better
looking than the previous version. Should be in the repos soon...

I agree that black background is a better idea - and not just because I
like black, but because of objective reasons, too.
1) With the many CRT screens that have not been adjusted for low
resolutions (i.e. all resolutions besides the one the user normally
