I just updated to 2.0.4-0ubuntu1. It changed nothing.
Font rendering is still broken.
I also tried to remove my ~/.openoffice.org2/ directory, but that also
didn't help.

Had that issue also. Seems to be fixed now though. Do you have the

To my opinion this should be considered a release blocking bug. Nearly
unreadable documents are not acceptable.

If you take a look at the screenshot, again the font used in the
OpenOffice.org user interface is the same as used in the GNOME menu bar,
but in OOo it's barely readable!
