Ok, just noticed that changing the cups server from localhost to
127.0.0.1 in the print configuration dialog of kprinter fixes the
problem (system options => cups server => host). No more connection
errors and the printers are visible.

me too.
i use a hp 2420dn on a network and kprinter doesn't see it after upgrading to
kde3.5.5 even if it is configured in cups (i can see it and configure it using
the standard web interface http://localhost:631).
this error will show even if i restart the cups daemon
