Running Maverick 10.10
I have the same hardware configuration, but normally use a second monitor and
so was unaware of this until a few hours ago. I did try the different kernel
versions at boot up and found that the problem is not present when I choose
2.6.32-25-generic at the grub boot scree
Same thing with my NV7928 and Maverick.

It's a dirty hack, but if you plug in an external monitor during
startup/installation then the backlight will work on the laptop display.

Gateway NV79 with the same problem. Even the Gparted boot disk results
in the same blank screen. Not going to include a bunch of logs as this
is clearly a problem with the xserver-org and HM55 video, culled from
other posts on this exact same subject across the net. Have tried the
32-bit and 64-bit
This did not happen in Lucid, but after running the upgrade to Maverick, I'm
also encountering this issue.
