I dist-upgraded today and indeed, the issue didn't re-appear so it seems

This looks to be the same issue of

didn't notice any xorg updates in the process but something looks like
it has fixed the issue.

With "nomodeset" I get 660 fps in glxgears, without it I get 60.
I don't really know what part of the solutions in the 6411525 bug you
