my last comment didn't appear here so I assume I crashed firefox or
something. i am using current 2.6.17 xen packages, all up to date. I
regenerated the initramfs as per chuck's suggestion and now it boots!
still some other errors though...

Please regenerate your ramdisk there was an initramfs update which might
have prevented you from booting.
