I can confirm this problem. I have read about it in other places, and it doesn't sound like it is specific to any type of laptop. But if it is, I have a Fujitsu Lifebook S2110. my brightness buttons used to work (in dapper). I edited the brightness levels in gconf and nothing happened. Also

found that PCC_ACPI is not loaded at bootup, sony_acpi is loaded instead. blacklisted sony_acpy and modprobbed pcc_acpi doesn't show any /proc/acpi/pcc so no hotkey or brighness support is available. moreover is impossible to change screen brightness since is in /proc/acpi/video/VGA0/LCD/brightn
