I just installed Maverich release candidate:

The computer resumes perfecly with backlight in the right level.

I've had the identical problem on all kernels, lucid and maverick, but
2.6.36-999-generic #201009221120
finally works for me. Resume has worked for quite some time, but the blank
screen - I've had for quite
some time.
Using precisely the same hw as reported above.

If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would
be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue.
Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the
upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstr
I tried also :
linux-image-2.6.35-020635rc1-generic_2.6.35-020635rc1_amd64.deb
But this kernel does not resume at all after suspend.

I tried the latest kernel:
v2.6.36-rc3-maverick
.but the x server does not start (it complains bout i915 modes not
recognized at bootup) so I couldn't try suspend/resume.
