This seems to be caused by a bug in the e1000 module. If I remove that
module with rmmod, the machine crashes, and if I whitelist that module
in /etc/default/acpi-support, the machine hibernates successfully.

Hm. Unfortunately, there appears to have been an initial failure (that
we have the last 4 lines of), and then another one. With luck I'll be
able to test an X60s in a couple of days.

I will need some help with this as the LCD often (although not always)
turns off before the kernel panics. I can tell it panics by the
blinking caps lock key. Is there any way to disable the premature
turning off of the LCD so that I can submit a fuller bug report? I
assume it is done by the hib
