Seems to be working again after a kernel upgrade today.
I think the issue was not with Mesa libs but rather the previous kernel
image version.
Please close. Thanks!

Is it possible to somehow get hold of the old version 6.5.2-3ubuntu1 of
these mesa packages so at least 3D will work while this bug is in the
pipeline?
They are not in my apt cache and not on archive.ubuntu.com either.

It's back! Mesa packages are broken again :-(
Ubuntu 7.04 (PPC)
The following packages were upgraded from 6.5.2-3ubuntu1 to
6.5.2-3ubuntu6 on 20/03/07.
libgl1-mesa-swx11
libgl1-mesa-swx11-dev
libglu1-mesa
libglu1-mesa-dev
and since then there is no direct rendering for my ATI rv350 (r300

If this is the only package which is having problems with rendering then
I suggest you take it up with the maintainer.

I'm still getting the same behaviour with XAA and updating my feisty as

Hi Erik,
I'm updating my machine right now, I already tried changing to XAA

Maybe this bug should be redirected at the mesa packages rather than
linux-xorg-video-ati package since the consensus is that that is where
the problem lies.
Hopefully someone will manage to package mesa 6.5.2 - I am attempting to
compile the DRI libraries to test whether this upgrade will indeed
Indeed this does look like a duplicate of bug 69607.
Is anyone sure what package is the problem here? The modular Xorg makes
it damn hard to tell where the problem lies.
xserver-xorg-video-ati provides radeon_drv.so
and libgl1-mesa-dri provides radeon_dri.so & r300_dri.so

Can you please provide some hints on how you managed to backport the
newer mesa packages? I've got basic linux skills, but I'm not yet
familiar with compiling and installing packages from source.

I have succeeded in backporting newer mesa packages from debian repositories
into my edgy system. This has resulted in 3D working much better. instead of
20-25 fps i used to get in glxgears I now get around 1500 fps. Plus glxgears
doesn't exhaust 100% cpu anymore. These I thought were very good

I've got a PowerBook5,8, and I also run and up to date Gentoo system on

I've got the same problem running Edgy Xubuntu on a Powerbook G4 1.5 ghz
w/Radeon Mobility 9600. My glxinfo also reports direct rendering to be:
"Yes". Compositing is turned off. I also ran gentoo on this machine some
months ago with working direct rendering.

I can confirm this on my PowerBook G4, Radeon 9600 (r300, Edgy).
Acceleration worked fine in Dapper. My glxinfo output also reports
"direct rendering: Yes".
Booting from the DesktopCD does not make a difference in this respect.
I can confirm that an iBook G4 with the r200 driver works OK in edgy.
I have an iBook with radeon 9550. glxinfo says dri is working, but glxgears
gives me about 25-30fps + 100% cpu usage.
Unfortunately I'm not sure if it worked well before in dapper. I am sure,
though, that about 6-9 months ago when I still used gentoo on this machine I
had r300 driver fully worki
