Okay, I took a look through the kcontrol settings, and saw that it was
set to use OpenGL. Changed compositing type to XRender and everything
seems to work. Silly me.

So, DRI is not involved in the 2D-only desktop effects, and the new
nouveau driver should still support all the same XRender extensions the
old one did.
I'd guess this will be a kwin bug. What is the actual problem that you
are experiencing? What error messages are reported, etc?

The nouveau driver in maverick has always supported many of the desktop
effects like transparency and shadows. I don't think these required 3D
support. It could be a problem with kwin as that was upgraded around the
same time as xorg.
Also, libgl1-mesa-dri-experimental is not installed.

Nouveau has never had 3D support by default in Ubuntu, although the 3D
component is provided in the libgl1-mesa-dri-experimental package. Do
you have this package installed?
