Have you tried both hibernate and suspend?
Are the results the same?
Have you tried changing other settings in /etc/default/acpi-support?
I've just fixed hibernation for me (nvidia 6600GT) by setting
SAVE_VBE_STATE=false, so there is hope.

This is a Dell Latitude D810, with an ATI Mobility Radeon X300. Ubuntu
version is Edgy Knot 3. I already told you in the bug report, that the
machine freezes because only power off helps.

Ok, can you tell us what graphics card you have and what version of ubuntu you
are running? Also, can you tell whether the machine is alive or not?
For example, does ctrl-alt-f1 followed by ctrl-alt-del shut down the laptop?

Does changing SAVE_VBE_STATE to false in /etc/default/acpi-support,
solve the issue?
