upstream release after comment 3 was about 10 days later as version
0.9.31 which is already in maverick. Thus, setting to fix released.
Please reopen the ticket if the problem does indeed remain.

Thanks for spotting this. I hadn't been able to reproduce it, so it
was previously tricky to debug.
The attached patch fixes it by offering to refresh the cache if the
current cache is empty, as per your first suggestion.
I've committed it, and you'll see it in the next release.
