I second: have the same problem here, but only with human theme.
Switching to another one solves the space on tray issue.

I do not think it is a problem with the gdesklets package since it also
appears it I remove the gdekslets-package from my system. It is the
normal tray icon for the network. I will attach a screenshot including
the info dialogue box. I am sorry it is in german..
By the way: I upgraded from dapper,
this icon belongs to the human icons theme.
