This seems to be a configuration issue with the HyperSpace system
firmware rather than a bug in Ubuntu.

I have been 'fighting' against this problem and the only way I found to
solve it was removing HyperSpace. The problem seems to be the quick
start method used for launching HyperSpace. Once removed, grub loads as
expected.

On closer thought I realized that I didn't test the Ubuntu hibernated+Windows
not hibernated scenario.
Indeed, in this case grub doesn't show.
Apparently Windows is in full control; if Windows is hibernated grub is shown,
if windows is not hibernated grub doesn't show.
