Confirmed an issue only from 2.6.31 onward (tested on 2.6.31/32/34).
Confirmed working on 2.6.29/30.
Memtest came back fine after 13 passes, so it's not a hardware issue,
however if I run the same command from a VM of Lucid (running on the
same hardware), the problem goes away.

I'm able to induce the situation if I run 'cpan' on a complex module
(this is only one way to induce it, it's not the only time this
happens).
I did it from a tty, and soon after running the command, I suddenly got
a huge barrage of messages scrolling quickly on my screen. It was
obvious that the
