Do you see any difference in the VLC logs (vlc -vv) from the SD card and from
the hard drive?
Does the OOM problem still occur if you turn off audio (vlc --no-audio) ?

I will provide an strace tonight but the camera is not the problem. I
had the SD card inserted into a reader attached to the computer at the
time I hit the bug; the camera was not connected at that time.
