Still affects me, using gnome-volume-control as well as alsamixer.
Pulseaudio doesn't fix this because changing the volume of "master" in
pulseaudio using keyboard shortcuts or panel applet changes both the
volume of pulseaudio master and of alsa master. I am using Jaunty but
have experienced this

Is this symptom still reproducible in 8.10 alpha?
Note two things:
1) the symptom really is a codec issue; it /may/ be able to be worked around
there;
2) the use of PulseAudio in hardy and later Ubuntu releases allows for the use
of the pavucontrol utility, which is much more useful for multicha
I'll echo what dewie said, as I'm experiencing the exact same problem
with the rear channels when I adjust the main volume. This is on a
fresh install of Gutsy...

I too am having this issue on a fresh install of Gutsy. I got around
this somewhat by changing default device the keyboard controls to the
"PCM" option in sound preferences. It would still be nice to have a
"front" "rear" and "master".

I have a simmilar problem. I have a laptop and the mixer displays the
chanels as front and headphone. It does not have a master volume control
the master volume control seems to control the front chanel only. mute
and unmute only affects the front chanel.

I can confirm this as my brothers Creative Soundblaster Live! 5.1 also
has this problem. This is an ALSA problem as alsamixer doesn't mute
rear/center either.
